A visit to Miller Farms!

One thing that I (Larae) strive for in our lives is to eat a diet of healthy, real foods. This can be tricky when trying to live on a budget! When we moved into our home in January, one of the first items that we purchased with our first time home buyers tax credit was a deep freezer that sits in our basement. That has enabled us to stock up on things like fruit, cheese and meat when they are on sale and we also purchased a quarter cow (grass fed) from a local farmer.

Yesterday I went with my friend Beth, who is also an Eagle Lake wife, to a local produce farm where we had the opportunity to pick up to 240 lbs of produce for only 40 dollars! I'm not sure if we got all the way up to 240 lbs, but I think it was close. We also had the help of Beth's 3 kids and another little boy she was taking care of for the day. Everything is more complicated when kids are along, but it's always more fun!

Here is what we picked: 4 bags of carrots, 4 bags of onions, about 50 ears of corn, 1 bag of potatoes, 4 pumpkins, winter squash, 2 bags of beets, 4 bags tomatoes, and 1 huge head of cabbage

We're giving some of that bounty to friends and the rest I will be freezing and canning. Today I plan on freezing corn and carrots and canning tomatoes. Then I'll have these delicious local foods to enjoy all winter long.

Here we all are with just some of our pickings
